Why Are Plastic Bags Abroad Paid?
At the beginning of many environmental impacts that threaten the world are the inadequate storage of waste and the lack of recycling efforts. While our country is concentrated on environmental protection, recycling, waste conservation, some sanctions are applied in other world countries for the use of harmful materials such as plastic bags. Reducing the use of plastic bags, collecting batteries, glass, paper, plastic waste in different containers is done to reduce the damage done to nature. The garbage cans of different colors that we see almost everywhere in the streets are also included for these studies. Especially in the last few years, nature-friendly plastic bags have been included in supermarkets in the scope of studies on plastic materials which are the most harmful to nature. This method of reducing the use of plastic bags is also being widespread. In other countries, however, the attitude towards the use of plastic bags seems to be somewhat differentiated.
Plastic bags abroad are usually offered to customers for a fee. Scotland, for example, wanted to pay 25 cents for each bag to be used 2 years ago. The intent of this application is, of course, to encourage the use of recyclable, easy and harmless products, such as reusable cloth bags, pouch paper, instead of using plastic bags. This practice in Scotland was successful and prevented 650 million plastic bags from being discarded in one year.
Countries such as Northern Ireland, England, Wales have been paying for nylon bags since 2010. Because the number of plastic bags used in the United Kingdom this year has reached 6 billion, and as long as it does not stop, this number will increase and harm more nature. Among the countries where plastic bags are paid are Germany. Here, although it is not forbidden to use plastic bags, it is expected that customers will be bringing their cloth bags, reusable shopping bags with them as they go shopping. Since 2011, the use of nylon bags in Italy is prohibited. In Italy, which has a clear and tough stance on the use of plastic bags, people come to their shopping with cloth bags. If the use of plastic bags is found in Italy, fines up to 25 thousand euros can be applied. Countries that band nylon bags include Mexico, India, Bangladesh and some cities in Australia.
In addition to these, we invite you to read our Top Country of Recycling Award to learn about the most successful countries on recycling.
Nylon Bag Losses
So why is the use of nylon bags paid or banned? When the raw materials of nylon bags are left to nature because it is petroleum-derived, the dissolution is dissolved in water for 400 years and 800 years on land.
Because it is so long and petroleum-based, it is restricted to use as cancer-causing harmful substances in the soil and because they harm the soil not only in nature but also in humans. While the use of nylon bags is not discontinued, recycling efforts must be provided in sufficient quantities. If products such as net, shopping bag, cloth bag are used in shopping, this rate per person will help to use 20 thousand 160 less plastic bags per 6 and 70 years. This ratio is too big to be neglected in terms of nature. In this case, which is also valid for our country, 37 billion fewer nylon bags will be produced in 70 years with only one person stopping the use of plastic bags.
In addition to the harm to nature, it is said that the cancer cases that have increased in recent years are related to the use of harmful petroleum derivative materials such as plastic bags. For this reason, it would be more beneficial to avoid using black nylon bags, which are still resistant to bans in our country, and prefer to use more environmentally friendly products whenever possible.
